John Jeffery was a Confederate veteran. He was a private in the cavalry unit of Waul's Texas Legion. At one point he spent 7 month in a Union prision, which temporarily ruined his health, then returned to Texas and finished out the war in a unit stationed in Galveston. After the ware he rounded up all the marverick longhorns he could find around the Leesville area, and began making trail drives up the newly formed Chisolm Trail. Sometimes his wife Mary went along too. He made a lot of money from cattle and began investing in land, eventually becoming the largest landowner in Gonzales County although he continued to sing his name with an 'X'
