Note* | Family tradition has it that Johann Meurer and his family intended to settle in Texas when they came to America, but stopped in Saint Louis because they would have to pass through New Orleans which was experiencing a cholera epidemic at the time. Johann Meurer's oldest son, Johann Henry Meurer, moved to Texas during the 1880's. On May 11, 1861 Johann enlisted in the 5th Regiment of Missouri Volunteer Infantry at the Saint Louis Arsenal for three months service. The Regiment was 65 percent German. He was promoted to Sergeant on June 6, 1861, probably because he had prior military experience in the army of the Duke of Nassau in Germany. The Regiment left Saint Louis on June 16, 1861 and march Southwest, via Rolla, Missouri and left on Company at Lebanon and two at Springfield. It saw action at Dry Forks, ten miles north of Carthage, Missouri, on July 5, 1861. It took part in an expedition toward Fayette, Arkansas on August 3rd through 5th, 1861 and the Battle of Wilkson's Creek on August 10, 1861. The Regiment then returned to Saint Louis, via Rolla and mustered out on August 27, 1861. It lost one officer and 24 enlisted men killed in action, and 32 enlisted men from disease. Johann Meurer's service during this campaign is unclear. The 1890 Special Census of Civil War veterans states that he was shot in the right arm, but no medical record has been found. An affidavit from the First Sergeant of Company E, 5th Missouri Infantry (3 months) in Johann Meurer's Civil War pension file states that Johann Meurer was on the sick list at Springfield, Missouri during the first part of the August 1861 and unfit for duty. It further states that he became sick just after their return from Carthage. It appears that Johann Meurer took part in the engagement at Carthage, but not the battle at Wilkson's Creek. His illness was probably the reason that he did not re-enlist for three year's service like most of his comrades. | |
