John Schenk

| Note* | John Schenk was born in Austria in 1844. He left the port of Bremen on April 12, 1870 and arrived at the port of New Orleans on May 20, 1870. He received his citizenship in 1878. It has not been established as to the kinship of John to Anton Beck, but relatives mentioned he was related. John and Anton Beck were good friends. In 1881 they bought 159 acres of land together with Anton working the 89 acres on the west side and John the 70 acres on the east side. In 1893 John sold his 70 acres to Anton and bought land that bordered Anton's on the south. In 1902 he sold the land to Frank and Karoline Kainer. John Schenk was one of the leaders in the building of the first St. Michael's Catholic Church in Weimar. The labor was donated by the parishioners, and the building committee advanced their private funds to purchase heavy timbers. John and Rosina Schenk were present at the marriage of Anton Beck II and Ida Skrobanek in 1907. He sang the wedding toast. No record of John Schenk's death was found. Rosina Schenk was born in 1845, and she died at the age of 84 on March 23, 1929. She is buried in St. Michael's Cemetery | |
